Great day trip!

I travelled with Tom in The Beast. Tom was an amazing guide, he was funny and knowledgeable and it was like hanging out with an eccentric Viking friend, and I know everyone wants that in their lives. The trip to the lava field was brilliant, it's a bit of a climb (uphill there and back) but I think the main difficulty was that we were calf-deep in snow most of the time. We stopped periodically to take pictures of the scenery, had a nice wander around some craters, it was a good time! The bus could have been a bit more comfortable, but honestly, that's just trying to find a negative. Lunch was incredible, too. Highly recommend!

The tour was completely different to as advertised- two stops were completely missed off and the tour lasted one hour less than stated. The volcano hike was listed as being 4 hours but in total the volcano stop was 1.5 hours. Don’t book through a third party provider. Book directly to know what you’re getting!
Nice hiking experience for non beginners.

The hike was amazing, the guide was very helpful and willing to share stories about Iceland. However I was expecting to see more of the volcanoes. One tip for beginners in hiking, remember to purchase hiking boots and water proof trousers or else you’re gonna suffer during the hike.

I think this is one of my favourite tours i did during my stay in Iceland, Tommi was such a great guide and kept us so entertained the whole trip. I thought it would be boring at first because it was just a hike but the views were amazing and i really felt a sense of accomplishment when i reached the top of the volcano, we even felt an earthquake at the top which was so fun! We saw loads of beautiful beaches too! I would definitely recommend this tour.

Really glad we did this tour! It was difficult physically for me in places due to the climb up but so worth it as the views were amazing and something I will remember for forever. Something I didn’t like is that when you are buying the tour they say the nave safety poles and shoes for you which they did but we had to pay extra for them which I don’t think was right as they were needed on that climb

Quite simply the most amazing day we have ever had. Never in my life would I ever get to see a recent lava flow. Tom our guide was quite simply brilliant. His knowledge, passion and enthusiasm was awesome. He took us to some amazing places. This has to be a must if you are coming to Iceland. Don’t leave without doing this trip

Highly recommended tour, which one should definitely take! Matt was a very competent, informative und entertaining guide, while the visited places were astonishing. Unfortunately, it was not possible to fully complete the tour as the road was blocked right before the volcano hike due to weather conditions. We were informed, that the road block was decided on short notice, which is why the tour was not cancelled before it started. I did not have the feeling at any point, that the tour started while knowing of this situation just to grab the participants' money. Instead, I received a 50% discount for another tour. Great customer service!

Volcano hike was good but rest of the tour poorly organised and disappointing

It was not a small group- there were 30 plus people on the tour. They had merged 3 different tours onto one group which meant we spent an hour sat in the blue lagoon car park and were then rushed at the afternoon stops and didn’t even get to stop at gunnhver at all which was disappointing and not what we paid for.

My First Hiking Trip in Iceland
Sally_C
, Sep 2021
The tour started on time with our guide Simon. The trip was well organized and with some thoughtful bonuses: We went to a bakery and a grocery store to get lunch; We stopped by a place where we saw the drying of Cod; We drove to Kleifarvatn Lake, where the water is pure enough for drinking; and we tried some fresh-picked crowberries. Then, we stopped at the Gunnuhver Hot Springs to see the boiling mud pots.
The rain had lightened up when we arrived at Fagradalsfjall. We each put on a bright orange vest for visibility and rented trekking poles. We started our hike on path C by Langihryggur (4.5km) along the lava flow. The terrain was flat in the beginning; it did not take us long to reach the first sight of lava deposited from June, which was charcoal grey color with smooth surface. As we hiked deeper into the valley, we saw new lava from a day ago; it had almost black color with sharp rough surface. Although we could see steam coming out from the lava, we could not smell the gas because the wind was blowing it away from us. The temperature got warmer here and Simon advised us to take off a layer of clothes before we continued.
This section of path C, going to the mountain top, was difficult as it was quite steep. The path was clearly marked with orange sticks to guide you. If you were an inexperience hiker, like me, you could go slowly; no one was behind to rush you. This is not a race as Simon said. He was very patient and always kept the whole group in sight. After about an hour, we reached an area where you could see the crater. The rain had stopped and I saw blue sky and sunshine. Simon brought us some chocolate rum sweet treats to refuel our energy. We took a short break before hiking another 15 minutes up to the top of the mountain where we could sit down and eat lunch. Simon treated us with Icelandic Christmas bread, it was delicious. We enjoyed the volcano eruption view with steaming lava in the valley; the eruption was happening about every 8 minutes the day we were there. We also witnessed some magma flowing down the hill across from where we were. We walked by the webcam which monitors the volcano activities 24x7, so you could catch any eruption you might have missed for the day.
After lunch, we started to go down the hill but constantly looked back to check on the possibility of another eruption. The path going down was less steep, there were people coming up the path too. I made it to the bottom of the hill in about 1:15 hour. On my way to the van, I picked up a small lava rock as my souvenir.
We left Fagradalsfjall and continued our trip driving through the Reykjanes Peninsula, passing by a fishing town. We stopped by the Reykjanes Lighthouse area, where the sun was at an angle that made the ocean a shimmering gold color. We made a quick stop to enjoy the spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean below the cliffs and rocks of the Iceland landscape. Afterwards, we went to The Bridge Between Continents and walked across the Eurasian to the American tectonic plate. Our last brief stop was at the Blue Lagoon for a drop off.
As we arrived at Reykjavik, it was raining, so Simon was so kind to drop us off at our hotel. The trip was amazing, well planned, and completely exceeded my expectation as my first hiking trip in Iceland!!!

We perform checks on reviews
You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site.

Sorting, ranking, and search results
Viator wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. That’s why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you.
On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You’ll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.
You’ll see some experiences with a “Promoted” badge, which means that the operators of those experiences have agreed to pay Viator more to have their experience highlighted.
If you see an Experience Award Winner label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Viator over a 12-month period.
The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We’re always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.
